Rust Repair

As anyone who has ever owned one will know, metros do rust!

On my red auto, there is some non structural surface rust on the doors, wheel arches and valences. Before this begins to take a proper hold of the metalwork I have decided to take control of it.

In this example I will show the repair of one of the wheel arches which, although isn't severely rusty, the paint is bubbling and it needs dealing with before it takes control and M.O.T. failures are imminent.

Step 1

First job is to rub the rust down to the bare metal, this can be done with a coarse sandpaper to begin with, this rubs away the bulk of the rust down to the metal beneath. After this it is suggested and recommended that it is rubbed down with a much finer sandpaper to make a smoother surface.

Step 2

This surface should be then cleaned using white spirit (I used a cheap paint brush cleaner fluid and it seemed to work!), this should be done using a lint free cloth so as to not leave fibres. Once the surface is smoothed and cleaned it is ready for the painting process to begin.

Step 3

The first job in the painting process is to apply the primer. I used a hammerite paint brush application primer which I recommend but there are many others on the market in either paint brush or spray can applications which will do just as good a job. The primer tends to have to be applied three times, with two hours between each application. This will ensure that
